In compliance with the international standards and regulations, the Imam Al-Hujjah Hospital project has envisioned and designed an efficient 260 sq. meter wide, Central Sterile Supplies Department (CSSD) that meets the laws and regulations of the international standards. Therefore, CISA Group, a leading Italian central sterilization system provider has been contracted to supply and equip the CSSD at the hospital. The CSSD will have the following areas. The (dirty) area; in which all equipment, surgical tools and supplies are cleaned using ultrasonic washing machines, washing counters and water and steam gums. Then the surgical tools and supplies are passed through tow automatic washer-disinfector-dryer machine, to the second (clean) area. In this area all materials are inspected and packed using magnifying lenses, heat sealing machines and biological incubators. Finally, the packaged and sealed materials are passed to the third (ultraclean) area through two steam sterilizers (autoclaves) and low temperature Plasma sterilizers. The clean, sterilized packages are; then, dispatched to the surgical theater (through clean dumbwaiters) and other hospital quarters.
On January 9th, 2014 the project’s management had the privilege to visit CISA group manufacturing site, in Pomezia, Italy to inspect and receive the CSSD equipment. This equipment will hopefully be installed and commissioned at the site around the end of 2014. It is needless to say, without faithful donors’ generous contributions, this noble work, which ultimately will contribute to saving a deserving life, wouldn’t have been achieved.
It is worth noting that the CSSD or the SPD (Sterile Supplies Department) is an integrated place in the hospital that performs cleaning and sterilization on medical devices, equipment, and consumables for subsequent use in the OR, ER, ICU, and other vital quarters of the hospital. The method of choice for sterilization in the CSSD is steam sterilization utilized by autoclaves (sterilizers) that use steam heated up to 134 C, and a holding time of at least 15 minutes. To ensure the quality of sterilization, the autoclaves are equipped with a meter and charts that record temperatures and the pressure as functions of time. Color indicators are placed within to-be-sterilized packages for further verification. - The Development and Relief Foundation has expanded partnership with The Lady Fatemah (a.s) Charitable Trust (LFCT) Foundation which is a United Kingdom based, non-profit, faith-based humanitarian NGO.
